Common oven and stove problems

• Burner failure. Traditional coil ranges can be tested by swapping a known-good burner into the suspect socket. If the swap works, the original burner is the problem; if not, the switch receptacle likely needs replacement. Best left to a professional.
• Burner stuck overheating. A bad switch can cause a burner to stay at a constant high temperature — nobody wants dinner burnt.
• Incorrect “hot-surface” indicator. Another classic sign of a bad switch.
• Oven door won’t open. Often a stuck self-clean lock, malfunctioning internal clock, or oven control fault.
• Self-clean cycle doesn’t clean. Usually a broken function selector or latch.
